Biography

Di Zhang is an Associate Professor of Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen, China. His primary research interests include ultra-low-latency and ultra-reliable communications, as well as wireless security. He served as Co-Chair of the Communication Theory Symposium at the 9th IEEE/CIC International Conference on Communications in China (ICCC) and has organized multiple international workshops on short-packet communications at flagship conferences, including IEEE ICASSP 2023 and IEEE ICC 2022. He is a Pengcheng Distinguished Professor of Shenzhen, and has received three provincial-level science and technology awards in recognition of his research contributions.

Talk abstract

Mission-critical communications is a key enabling technology for emerging applications including the low-altitude economy, cooperative intelligent transportation systems and intelligent swarms. In contrast to conventional broadband services, mission-critical applications are characterized by short-packet transmissions and stringent requirements on latency, reliability, connectivity, and security. Existing wireless communication technologies, however, are largely optimized for high-throughput broadband services and are therefore not well suited to these distinct communication requirements. In this talk, we present our recent research on short-packet-based mission-critical communications. We first discuss channel coding techniques, and then the sparse vector coding mechanism, for low latency and reliable short-packet transmission. We then present endogenous security mechanisms that enhance intrinsic system resilience against security threats.
